Onyx Girandole Brooch C. 1890s

Onyx Girandole Brooch C. 1890s

Decorate your garments with your very own chandelier!

Inspired by the 'girandole', this antique brooch was handmade during the Victorian era around 1890s in 14 karat yellow gold. A 'girandole' is a smaller version of a chandelier or candelabra, and in jewelry, the design always features three dangling ornaments suspended from a (often bow-shaped) central motif. When these decorative fixtures were in vogue, girandole earrings became the most popular choice among women, which made sense considering the fashions of the time (lower necklines and romantic swept-up hairdos!), but the style also carried over onto brooches, pendants and even chatelaines. In the case of this antique brooch, a rounded onyx bar acts as the centerpiece, while 3 dangling onyx spheres are suspended from it, swaying with every move. This brooch measures approximately 2 inches long by 1 and 1/4 inches wide, and it has an early c-catch closure, original to the era in which it was crafted.

Anyone can appreciate the remarkably unique jewelry styles of the 19th century. The designs are so different from contemporary looks, yet still so chic, and the classic black and gold look pairs well with almost anything! This fine girandole brooch can easily be worn everyday and for many occasions ā€” make it yours today! It could even be converted permanently into a necklace by removing the bar and adding a split chain. If interested, please inquire here.
