Old Mine Diamond Memorial Locket c1870

Old Mine Diamond Memorial Locket c1870

A fiery old mine cut diamond sparkles wildly in this sleek black locket from the Victorian period! The locket is made of 14k yellow gold, beautifully enameled in black. Black jewelry became popular even beyond mourning for which it often symbolized. When Queen Victoria lost her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861, she went into deep mourning and wore black for the rest of her life. As the beloved queen does, so do her people, and black became the most popular color to accent or feature in jewelry throughout the time period. The bright diamond weighs about .50 carat, is a near colorless H grade, and a very clean SI1 clarity grade. The back of the locket has its original glass cover which is easily removed to insert a photo or a lock of hair which it was likely made for. This locket came to us empty. It measures about 1 1/2 by 1 1/8 inches and is about 3/8 inch thick. The very simply embellished bale adds another 1/2 inch in length. The chain is not included but is available here.
