c1880 Intense Fancy Brown Diamond, Natural Pearl, and Demantoid Garnet Brooch

c1880 Intense Fancy Brown Diamond, Natural Pearl, and Demantoid Garnet Brooch

A regal brooch indeed! This crown-topped bauble houses multiple remarkable rarities. The center piece is a large natural pearl, just one of many natural pearls throughout the piece. Today, pearls are cultured, and those found in nature, like these, can be priceless. The bright green stones are demantoid garnets, also rare, and known for their unique bright color and horsetail inclusions. They were a favorite among Russian royalty in the late 19th century when this brooch was made. They were nearly mined out by 1905 and today they are most often found set into period pieces like this. The crown jewels feature an intense fancy brown diamond front and center, weighing about .55 carat. It is flanked by an aquamarine on either side and another diamond on either side of those, which weigh a total carat weight of about .30. It was made around 1880 in 18k rose gold. The safety was added around 1915. The brooch measures 1 5/8 inches long and 1 1/4 inches at its widest.
