Fred Harvey Era Turquoise and Sterling Necklace

Fred Harvey Era Turquoise and Sterling Necklace

A souvenir from the days of luxurious train travel across the Wild West! This necklace was produced in what is known as the "Fred Harvey Era" of the early twentieth century. He was an entrepreneur who opened up the Southwest to tourism by making train travel more desirable with restaurants at every station. This allowed for shops to open up at these depots, where souvenirs like this could be sold. Most of these pieces were made by Native Americans for this market. They are usually stamped with many symbols. Some were embellished for tourists, and some were ancient, like the whirling logs seen here, a symbol of prosperity and luck before it was infamously repurposed in the 1930s. This allows us to date this piece as being made before that time. It is made in sterling silver with three beautifully aged turquoise stones. It measure 15 3/4 inches long and 5/8 inch wide.
