French Paste Flower Spray Brooch c1860

French Paste Flower Spray Brooch c1860

Paste, the original rhinestone, dates back to the 1720s. The technique was developed by King Louis XV's court jeweler and was instantly popular with royalty and aristocrats for nearly two centuries thereafter. While we view rhinestones as a kind of faux gemstone, paste was highly regarded as an exciting new art form. Due to their heavier leaded content, paste stones sparkle more brilliantly than rhinestones ever could!

This stunning floral brooch features exemplary paste stones in clear and chartreuse yellow hues, sparkling wildly all throughout. The pin back on this one-of-a-kind jewel is fully removable, denoting this brooch might've been worn at the front of the head and attached to a tiara! Handmade in France during the Victorian era, this opulent brooch is perhaps more beautiful over a century later, it's bright stones now perfectly contrasted and highlighted by the silver's dark, antique patina. Measuring a striking 4 and 1/2 inches long, it is guaranteed to draw enchanted glances from across candlelit tables. A highly dramatic 19th-century stunner – ready to join your collection!
