Surreal Pansy Stick Pin c1910

Surreal Pansy Stick Pin c1910

Pretty as a pansy! If that's not a saying, this adorable brooch has us convinced it should be. This surreal beauty is rare in its composition– a golden face smiles brightly from the center of a pansy, a flower drenched in symbolism. 'Pansy' comes from the latin root 'pensare': to think or ponder. The flower was used as a symbol for The Freethinkers Society (founded around the time this brooch was made), for this very reason. It was also used to secretly convey the message 'I think of you' in Victorian England, when wrapped up in seemingly innocent bunches of gifted herbs! Whatever the message of this remarkable piece, it will not be forgotten! Its incredible enamel work is so artfully crafted that it almost appears hand-painted, and indeed, it was certainly handmade in 14k yellow gold around 1910. As far as we know, this is a one-of-a-kind stick pin– we have never seen anything like it! The stick measures 2 1/4 inches long while the motif measures 7/8 inch at its widest points.
