Victorian Micro-Mosaic Locket Pendant
Micro-mosaics are tiny, beautiful works of art created by meticulously arranging tiny glass pieces of varying shapes and colors into a representative image. They were most popular in jewelry during the "Grand Tour" era of the 16th to early 19th centuries. Young aristocrats would tour Italy and other European destinations, educating themselves on arts and culture of the previous eras. Oftentimes they would collect micro-mosaics to keep as mementos or send back to loved ones!
This magnificent example was made in 19th Century Italy in the Etruscan Revival style. It artfully depicts a garden of lush and colorful blooms in tiny micro-mosaic tessera, all set against a dramatic white background with tile-like adornments. The frame is crafted in satiny 18 karat yellow gold, with a large, beautifully detailed bale. A locket on the backside completes the keepsake, ready to house your own sweet memory!
