19th Century Micro Mosaic Necklace

19th Century Micro Mosaic Necklace

Micro-mosaics are tiny, beautiful works of art created by meticulously arranging tiny glass pieces of varying shapes and colors into images and patterns. They were most popular in jewelry during the "Grand Tour" era of the 16th century to early 19th century. Young aristocrats would tour Italy and other European destinations, educating themselves on arts and culture of previous eras. Oftentimes they would collect micro-mosaics which depicted landmarks, or would commission custom pieces as souvenirs or keepsakes to send back home to loved ones. This gorgeous, exemplary necklace from 19th century Rome features nine micro-mosaic drops that descend from a chain that incorporates eleven tiny matching mosaics throughout. The drops elegantly graduate to the largest in the middle, which says 'Roma' in little letters at its center! This sweet historical keepsake is a true work of art that remains a treasure in the 21st century!
