Rafael Melendez Taxco Sterling & Jade Cuff c1940
Rafael Melendez is among the most highly regarded Taxco silversmiths of the mid-20th century. His distinctive designs combine expert modern silver craftsmanship with precolonial motifs and linear patterns that celebrate Mexico's dynamic aesthetic history. This stunning forearm cuff is exemplary: deeply carved grooves and lines create a stunning design that radiates around a large jade cabochon at its center while smaller bezel-set jade stones dot the outer ends of the carved pattern, creating a halo around the entire motif. Made in the 1940s, this magnificent cuff is set in uncommon 980 sterling silver (98% pure silver). It's solid integrity is a mark of master silversmithing, and among the many reasons Melendez's work is so highly coveted!
