In the decades before the gold rush of 1849 there was a marked scarcity of the metal that heavily influenced jewelry designs. Styles of this period are distinctive for their ability to make the most with the least! Cannetille and filigree work were both prominent in jewelry of the period, and each had their own way of creating big beautiful patterns with thin, wire-like gold. While filigree work tends to be flat, cannetille is multidimensional. Threads of gold are manipulated into coils, springs, and tiny bead flowers that make up an airy, lacy pattern throughout the piece. The incredible workmanship allows for a bold, rich look from this light, romantic bracelet. Handmade around 1840 in 12k yellow gold, it has a beautiful patina nearly two centuries later. Three old mine cut diamonds add sparkle to the romance as the center of the most prominent floral motifs. Though they are little, their near colorless H-I color grades and VS clarity grades pack in far more glitter than their .15 total carat weight would suggest. The bracelet measures about 5/8 inch wide and 7 inches long, fitting an average sized wrist.
