Seven Days Cameo Bracelet c1970
Seven cameos, carved with seven gods, for the seven days of the week! Each cameo panel in this illustrious bracelet is carved with a different Roman god on their chariot, each pulled by different beings associated with their rule. Though there were many more gods in the Roman pantheon, the ones depicted here are associated with the seven celestial bodies traditionally studied in astrology: the luminaries (the Sun and Moon) and the five visible planets. We can see the names of the planetary gods reflected in the Roman days of the week listed. The panels go as follows: Monday, lunae for the moon, or Luna, pulled by two women; Tuesday, martis for Mars, pulled by two war horses; Wednesday, mercurii for Mercury, pulled by two roosters; Thursday, jovis for Jove (Jupiter) pulled by eagles; Friday, veneris for Venus pulled by doves; Saturday, saturni for Saturn pulled by winged serpents; and Sunday, solis for Sol or the Sun, pulled by four horses.
Made in Italy in the 1970s or 80s in 14k yellow gold, this bracelet has a hidden click-in tongue-in-groove clasp under the first panel, which depicts Luna. A figure-8 clasp provides added security. The bracelet measures about 7 inches long and 5/8 inch wide.
