A tribute to the goddess Ceres, who brings abundant fertility to soil and womb alike as the goddess of agriculture and motherhood. Only true devotion could produce such a finely carved cameo, whose artistry is particularly incredible in its depiction of sheer fabric that drapes over her exquisite curls. Made around 1850, this cameo is carved into lava and set in 14k yellow gold that frames the cameo with braided ropes of varying styles and textures. The back is proudly signed 'Cererere'. The safety clasp was likely replaced around 1930. The brooch measures about 1 7/8 inches long, 1 5/8 inches wide, and about 1/2 inch at its thickest point.
