Curious Bee Shell Locket Brooch/Pendant c1870
A true curiosity! A sweet little bee rests inside a gorgeous rose gold shell in this stunning brooch pendant. This intriguing 1870s bauble features a front piece that opens to reveal a locket component. Small natural pearls are set throughout and amplify the fertility symbolism that the bee and shell already bring. Inside the locket, the original framed glass panel is intact on its backside and flips up. Perhaps this bauble was meant to be used as a kind of vinaigrette, to hold a perfumed cloth or sponge. Perhaps there is a piece missing, though the way the front piece moves does not leave space for another type of cover to have been inside. It is a curious piece, beautiful and abundantly ornate, with so much space for creative expression!
This piece measures about 2 3/4 inches by 1 5/8 inches. It may be worn as a brooch or a pendant, as pictured. It is handmade in 10k white, yellow and rose gold. The blue gemstones are paste, an antique type of glass stone. The chain is not included, though options are available here and here, plus many more in our shop through inquiry.
