Zeus-Ammon Coral Cameo c1840
Zeus, God of the Gods in Greek mythology, is exquisitely carved here in bright coral. He wears a laurel on his crown to symbolize his supreme divinity, a victor among the gods, as his bust rises from a magnificent gold frame. As detailed as the ancient sculptures that inspired this brooch, his bust is three dimensional: all but the very back of his head is brilliantly depicted. Though his frame is made of rich 22k gold, two centuries of age has given it a fine patina that has darkened the bright gold near its crevices, beautifully contrasting the bright gold and highlighting its magnificent details. Two rams heads meet on either side of the frame, flanking Zeus and adding to his rich symbolism. The ram represents virility and authority, and became associated with Zeus through his syncretic association with the Egyptian god, Amun, thus becoming Zeus-Ammon. Like Zeus, Amun was known as the king of the gods, and was also a fertility god depicted with a Ram's head! This rare brooch was fashioned sometime between 1830 and 1850 and remains a marvel treasured for its rich symbolism and ancient allure.
