Rare Schreiner Gripoix Earrings C. 1950s
Originally imagined by Augustine Gripoix, the hand-poured glass 'Gripoix' technique really enhanced costume jewelry and took these pieces to the next level! A fine example is this pair of earrings from the 1950s, made by the Schreiner Jewelry Company. This vintage pair is designed to climb slightly up-the-ear, and it features 2 delicious honey-colored marbled glass cabochons that face each other and are adorned with marquis-cut and round-cut rhinestones. Each earring measures approximately 1 and 1/2 inch long by 1 inch wide, and they have their original clip-on backings that cannot be converted for pierced ears at this time.
At the height of its popularity, jewels by the NYC-based Schreiner Jewelry Company graced the covers of Vogue, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar and they were worn by celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, and Audrey Hepburn! Their costume jewelry is known for their unusual color combinations, hand-made settings and fun designs - and this rare pair is surely no exception!
