Agate is a type of quartz, and there are many, many types of agate. The Victorians loved it, and so do we! This long necklace, dating to the Victorian era, is intricately handwoven with elephant hair, and complete with a functional slide. During the time of the British Raj, Western European adventurers traveled to India and would commission elephant hair jewelry as mementos from their safari expeditions. A single strand of thick hair would be cut from the elephant's tail or collected organically through the natural shedding process, and then reimagined into a wearable piece of art. Dangling from the finely-woven chain is a banded agate cross connected from a swivel hook, adding the finishing touches to this striking necklace. Even at first glance one can see why the lapidary selected this natural, dark beauty of a stone, boasting the captivating, highly-contrasting layers of banded agate! While we hate to think of animals being hurt for sport or fashion, this striking necklace remains a remarkable relic from the past, ready to join a special collection.
