Micro-mosaics are tiny, beautiful works of art! They are made by creating a picture or design out of tiny glass pieces of varying shapes and colors. They were most popular in jewelry during the "Grand Tour" era of the 16th to early 19th centuries. Young aristocrats would tour Italy and other European destinations, educating themselves on arts and culture of the previous eras. Oftentimes they would collect micro-mosaics which depicted landmarks, or would commission custom pieces. They became a type of souvenir or sometimes a kind of postcard they would send back to their loved ones. This gorgeous pair depicts lovely birds among green leaves and white flowers against a black background. They are made of a combination of pinchbeck (a mix of alloys that wears like gold), rolled gold (an incredibly thick gold plated metal), and gilt metals. The earrings are screw-on for unpierced ears, though they may be converted to posts if preferred. They measure about 1 3/4 inches long and 3/4 inch at their widest.
