Sicilian Navicella Earrings c1780
Hailing all the way from 18th century Sicily and among the rarest pieces in our collection: a pair of 'navicella' earrings! Navicella means little boat and refers to the shape and appearance of the ornamental portion of these historied earrings. Navicella earrings typically feature enameling throughout the 'boat' along with dangles that hang from the 'hull'. While more simplistic without the dangles, these are quite special for how bright and varied the enameling is, along with their unique watchdog motif. Set in 14k yellow gold, the watchdog is perched atop their center, protecting the wearer for centuries to come!
- Measurements: 1 inch wide and just over 1 1/4 inches long
- Condition is commiserate with their age (around 240+ years!). Some of the enamel is worn and it appears as though one knob is missing (as pictured)
- Clasped with a hinged hook that secures with tension
- Hallmarks throughout hooks are indecipherable
