Early Victorian 14k Dove Locket
The dove is a spiritual messenger, a lasting symbol of peace and hope. Its significance is profound in this piece, which was likely made to be a memorial locket. The dove creates incredible depth and dimension– sculpturally carved and carrying a sparkling ruby colored paste stone. This beautifully aged 14k gold locket was handmade in the early victorian era, around the 1840s in the Etruscan revival style of the period. It appears to have never been polished and has stunning blue and red iridescent patina in places that add contrast, showing off both its age and stunning details. The locket flips up from the back and has its original removable glass panel in a gold frame. The locket came to us empty as a clean slate to store memories. Typically the back cover would be engraved, though here it is not, indicating perhaps it was never utilized as it was meant. Even the bale is thoughtfully detailed and wide enough to fit a thick chain. The locket measures 2 1/4 inches from the bale to the bottom and 1 1/8 inch at its widest point. It is about 5/8 inch thick. The chain is not included, but is for sale here.
