Extra Long Guard Chain c1900

Extra Long Guard Chain c1900

Arguably THE most versatile addition to a jewelry collection — an extra long muff or guard chain! Both fashionable and practical, these chains were very popular during the 18th & 19th centuries: always long enough to be tucked into a belt and skirt pocket. The swiveling dog hook clasp was usually adorned with a pocket watch, a lorgnette, a wax seal stamp, keys or other decorative fobs. It was multi-purpose back then, and today its sixty inches of chain can be styled in so many different ways!

Crafted circa 1900, the chain boasts a gorgeous antique patina and a satiny feel, smooth with no kinks, while its dependable curb-style link is as beautiful as it is strong. Each tight-knit link is solid and smooth with a blush-bronze hue, glittering as it catches the light. Its versatile swiveling hook opens a world of possibilities for styling- this historied piece can be worn as one long chain as originally intended, or looped twice or even three times around the neck, as modeled, to make a stunning statement necklace.  Elegant and in excellent condition, this rare, extra long guard chain is simply everything you could wish for in an antique chain!
