Jet Memorial Locket c1870
Carved from a single remarkable stone, this polished jet locket is a fine example of Victorian memorial jewelry. Jet is a mineraloid that forms from decomposed wood pressurized over millions of years. Prized for its 'jet-black' hue, it is no wonder why it was most en vogue in the 1860s– an era when fashion was defined by mourning symbolism. This stunning memorial locket features both the allure of stark, black enameling in its gold bale as well as the captivating depth of carved jet. The stone is carved into an oval disk with one side carved out for a locket complete with a removable fitted gold frame and glass. A delicate fabric sits inside, awaiting the lock of hair or photograph that will make it a true memorial piece. The other side of the jet locket pendant features a beautifully facetted beveled edge and smooth, polished concave center that turns inward and deepens its black surface. Its removable bale allows the wearer to choose whether to display their beloved with the locket face up, or it's sleek, dark other side as the locket hides underneath. In any case, this beautiful pendant belongs close to thy heart, alongside a most cherished keepsake.
