Egyptian Revival Lava Pendant c1880

Egyptian Revival Lava Pendant c1880

A magnificent rarity, this Egyptian Revival pendant, dating to around 1880, features a pharaoh carved from lava wearing a spectacular nemes headdress studded with padparadscha rubies, along with a collar of demantoid garnets! Both of these gemstones are rarities in their own right, each with its own significance and allure. Handmade in weighty, rich gold, this remarkable pendant is impeccably detailed with dynamic carvings and well-preserved enamel. The result is a beautifully textured piece that frames the pharaoh with richness befitting a king! The headdress is complete with a gorgeous golden snake that slithers atop the crown, extending from a ruby at the center of its forehead band, all the way up the top. The pharaoh's head is carved from lava, displaying incredible dimension while featuring his complete profile in life-like detail. This pendant is itself an artifact from a period in time that is largely considered the birth of Modern Egyptology, as new archaeological techniques were implemented and excavations were increased, professionalized, and well-funded, leading to the discovery and preservation of some of the most iconic ancient Egyptian artifacts known today!
