Fine Micromosaic Dove Brooch c1850
Micro-mosaics are tiny works of art created by meticulously arranging tiny glass pieces of varying shapes and colors into a representative image. Colorful and highly-detailed, this brooch from the Victorian era depicts 3 doves, considered the bird of peace, among olive branches. It is a fantastic “Grand Tour” souvenir piece, which were most popular in jewelry during the "Grand Tour" era of the 16th to early 19th centuries. Young aristocrats would tour Italy and other European destinations, educating themselves on arts and culture of the previous eras. Oftentimes they would collect these micro-mosaic pieces, which depicted landmarks, life or classically-derived scenes, natural motifs, and more. Since these were small enough to wear or transport across their European journey, they became treasured items that you could show off at social gatherings or sometimes could be send back to their loved ones.
Handcrafted circa 1850 in Italy, this exquisite work of art sits on its original 18 karat yellow gold disk, framed by bold granulation. The gilt pin-back & hook were added closer to the 1930s. This antique micro-mosaic brooch is in excellent condition.
