French Horn Arts & Crafts Necklace by Georges Pierre
A rare treat for us – a genuine piece of jewelry from the Arts and Crafts Movement!
The Arts and Crafts Movement, in short, celebrated the craftsman over what came of the industrial revolution – manufactured goods that these artists believed were uninspired, and far removed from the beauty of the natural world. They believed everyone should have access to highly crafted beauty and purposefully used materials of lower value to make their pieces accessible to the middle classes. This antique necklace features a boldly sized, beautifully carved, French horn centerpiece depicting a cicada resting atop a blooming garden. A gorgeous murano glass drop bead dangles from the pendant, in an oceanic swirl of blues and greens that compliments the turquoise beads at the top, all strung on a long black silk cord with knots to hold them in balance. This stunning piece, dating to the early 1900s, was designed (and it is signed) by Georges Pierre, who was a Paris-based jeweller during the Art Nouveau era. Often inspired by the work of René Lalique, Georges Pierre specialized in carved horn and continued working in the Art Nouveau style as late as the 1930s. The finely-carved details and delicate colouration of the horn demonstrate the skill with which Pierre worked as he mastered the manipulation of the horn’s complex material structure. A true master horn-carver!
