Antique Sterling Finger Purse c1900

Antique Sterling Finger Purse c1900

Just the right size for a key and a few coins– all a lady needs at the turn of the century! Finger purses, or reticules as they are often called, acted as pockets for ladies when their garments did not have any or when pocketing items created an unsightly bulge. There were two ways to style their reticules, either fashioned on a finger or attached to a chatelaine! This sterling mesh version, made around 1900, is a rare find– its elaborately adorned enclosure is handcrafted through a meticulous repouseé process that creates images through manipulating the silver from behind to create three dimensional forms on the front. Cherub faces with highly detailed wings are among the most impressive features of the repouseé purse frame, alongside magnificent flourishes, scrolls, and elaborately bordered signets just below the clasp. While one of the signets is engraved with the script letters "ELH", the other is empty and ready to personalize! From the ballrooms of the Victorian era to the dancefloors of our modern moment, this little purse is ready to secure your essentials as you enjoy an elegant evening outing!
