Antique Gutta Percha Earrings
Gutta percha is an organic substance which comes from the latex of certain Malaysian trees. While it looks and feels somewhat like rubber, its unique chemical structure allows it to soften and bend when heated, then hardens into a solid, durable shape when cooled. Thanks to its highly pliable nature and dark hue, it became an ideal material for jewelry-making following Queen Victoria’s deep, public mourning in the 1800s. This pair of antique gutta percha earrings feature dice-like, three-dimensional tops that suspend a slender torpedo-shaped drop. They are decorated with tiny gold studs, providing a lovely contrast. Because this material was later used to make underwater telegraph cables in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these earrings remain a rare treasure from times past! They are in fantastic shape, awaiting their new caretaker!
