Description: "Mizpah" is a word taken from the Old Testament (Genesis 31:49 "...and Mizpah; for he said, the Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent from one another) Mizpah also translates to "watchtower" in Hebrew.
Mizpah jewelry was popular gift between loved ones during the mid to late 1800's. During periods of long separation such as military service, travel, and sometimes death a mizpah piece would be given to a sweetheart or loved one as a "forget me not". This Locket most likely would have housed a photo of a distant or deceased loved one.
All work on this piece is done by hand, exemplifying late victorian styling and beautiful craftsmanship.
