Micro-Mosaic Scarab Brooch c1880
Ancient Egyptian scarabs were symbols of resurrection, transformation, and immortality. How fitting that ancient Egyptian style is revived over and over again! With every tomb excavation, we see the alluring styles inspire the fashions of the modern era. The scarab is the most prolific ancient Egyptian motif, unceasing in its popularity– it never dies, but is reborn again era after era. This iteration was made in the 1880s when the mummy of Seti I was discovered, and then Amenhotep! Handmade in 18k yellow gold, this brooch features the revered micro-mosaic work of Florence artisans in Italy. Each stone is a piece of glass perfectly placed to create a stunning work of art. Most mesmerizing is the scarab's iridescent back, created by foiled glass. This piece is in excellent condition with just a barely visible chip on the foiled glass. The brooch measures about 1 3/8 inches by 1 1/8 inches.
