Murrle Bennet & Co. Turquoise Necklace c1905
A rare treat for us– a genuine piece of art jewelry from the Arts and Crafts Movement! This spectacular piece was made for Merrle Bennet & Co., who made jewelry much in the style of the most recognizable names attributed to the movement, such as Liberty & Co. The Arts and Crafts Movement, in short, celebrated the craftsman over what came of the industrial revolution- manufactured goods that these artists believed were uninspired, and far removed from the beauty of the natural world. They believed everyone should have access to this beauty and purposefully used materials of lower value to make is accessible to the middle classes. This piece can be attributed to the renowned artist Archibald Knox, whose pieces, ironically, considering the intention of the movement, can go for tens of thousands of dollars. It was handmade in London in 15k yellow gold, set with prized spiderweb turquoise from the Kingman Mine and dogtooth pearl dangles. It is currently 18 inches long, though in its lifetime it was extended from it's original 15 inch length. We are happy to restore it to the original length at no additional cost. The panels are each about 1 inch long and 3/4 inch wide
