The mask of Tutankhamun is inlaid with lapis lazuli, Cleopatra sworn by it as her favorite eyeshadow pigment, and Dutch art Master Vermeer also used this gem in order to create his captivating painting Girl with a Pearl. When Michelangelo demanded to use Lapis for the Sistine chapel, the stone was ground into an iridescent powder for his use, later coined 'ultramarine', and this became the most expensive of all the Renaissance colors.
