Pietra Dura Dangle Earrings c1860
Pietra Dura is the lost art of creating images by inlaying specifically cut stones into other stones. In jewelry, we see it most in the Victorian era, set into brooches, pendants and earrings like these! The token-like dangles are each a little different. One dove carries a sprig of white bellflowers, while the other carries a single green flower. The earring backs are screw-on, suited for non-pierced ears. They are made of 14k and were added or replaced in the 20th century. The most unique part of these is that the tokens easily slide off the earring backs, making them suitable to be worn as charms or pendants! Considering their 150+ year history, they are in terrific shape, though there is a small crack on one and has its beak missing, as you can see in the photos. It is fairly unnoticeable when worn. We can easily convert them to posts for pierced ears upon request.
