Wheat Onyx and Pearl Brooch c1890

Wheat Onyx and Pearl Brooch c1890

Wheat, 'the staff of life', was a prevalent symbol in Victorian mourning jewelry. Wheat has long been a symbol of everlasting life, fertility, and vitality. Black onyx distinguishes this lovely brooch as a memorial piece. Here, wheat represents the spiritual harvest and a long life, well-lived. The symbol was often used to commemorate someone who passed on later in life. Seed pearls, another symbol of life and fertility, give the wheat a luscious texture, set in bright 14k rose gold. The brooch's backing is also 14k rose gold and includes a hook that was originally meant for a hanging pocket watch or locket. It measures about 2 3/4 inches long, 5/8 inch wide, and 1/4 inch thick. The matching earrings are also for sale here.
