Wheat Onyx and Pearl Earrings c1890
Wheat, 'the staff of life', was a prevalent symbol in Victorian mourning jewelry. Wheat has long been a symbol of everlasting life, fertility, and vitality. Black onyx distinguishes these lovely earrings as a memorial piece. Here, wheat represents the spiritual harvest and a long life, well-lived. The symbol was often used to commemorate someone who passed on later in life. Seed pearls, another symbol of life and fertility, give the wheat a luscious texture, set in bright 14k rose gold. The earrings' findings are also 14k rose gold, though the ear-wires are in yellow gold and are not original. The onyx dangles are 7/8 inch long, almost 5/8 inch wide, and 1/4 inch thick. The earrings are 1 5/8 inch long from the top of the ear-wire. The matching brooch is also for sale here.
